Malton Masjid offers the service of performing marriages (Nikah) by our Imams who are registered as licensed marriage officers in conjunction with our organization. A licensed marriage officer is required to complete the necessary paperwork to register the marriage in the Province of Ontario. The marriage may be performed at any venue: Malton Masjid, hall, home or elsewhere.

The requirements to have a Nikah done through the Malton Masjid are as follows:



1. Marriage License Document

o A marriage license must be obtained from any City Hall in Ontario prior to the date of the Nikah
o For the City of Mississauga, please call (905) 615-3200 and ask for the marriage licensing officer
o Either the groom or bride may go to City Hall to obtain the license with the necessary documents of both parties

o The valid marriage license must be presented at the time and place of the Nikah ceremony
o Imam will fill and sign the remaining portion of the license, give you a temporary certificate and will send the remaining paperwork to the Office of Registrar General for you
o Imam will also record your Nikah ceremony into the Marriage Register Book given by the Office of Registrar General and ask both parties to sign



2. Wali (guardian) for the bride

o The bride must be represented by her Wali which is a male relative
o Examples of permitted Wali include father, brother, son, paternal uncle, grandfather, etc.
o Examples of not permitted Wali to include: maternal uncle, other women even if relatives, etc. in the presence of the aforementioned people



3. Two valid male Muslim witnesses

o These witnesses can be anyone as long as they have reached adulthood
o There is no requirement to have one witness from the bride’s side and one from the groom’s side
o Nor is it required to have two from each side
o Nor do the witnesses have to be relatives



4. Mahr (marital gift)

o The mahr should be discussed and agreed upon before the Nikah ceremony to avoid inconvenience



5. Nikah timings and fees

o Nikah ceremonies are restricted during the Madresa hours (4 pm – 8 pm)
o Nikah ceremonies will be performed after the completion of prayers including Juma (if being scheduled around prayer times)
o Imams scheduled to lead his daily and Juma prayers will perform the Nikah ceremonies, however, a special request for different Imam will be considered if the request is being made one month prior to the event and at the discretion of Imam
o Masjid provides this service at a fee of $200



6. Islamic etiquettes

o The Nikah will only be performed if proper Islamic Adaab / etiquettes are being followed at the place of ceremony

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If there is no marriage license, please do not contact the Masjid or the Imams as we will not be able to assist you in any circumstance to perform the Nikah.
